Tip of the Month - July Edition from Malcolm Young, Range Remedies, An illusive part of a good golf swing for some is the strong shoulder turn. In reality many golfers initiate the swing with a lot of unnecessary hand action and forearm rotation in the early stages of the takeaway. This often leads to the club beginning it’s path inside the target line. (Pic 1)
The ability to feel this position can often be a barrier to improving this part of the swing. A very simple drill is to use a full basket of balls on the range placing the clubhead infront so the back of the clubhead is touching the basket. The exercise promotes pushing the basket gently backwards with a strong shoulder movement rather than with a hands and arms movement. (Pic 2) With this feeling generated a follow on exercise is placing two balls with enough space for a clubhead to fit between (Pic 3). With a softer shoulder based turn the extra ball should roll gently away when the swing starts whereas a hand movement will tend to throw the ball more quickly and further away. This exercise helps promote a smooth backswing tempo to build power. The end result should be a stronger angle with the club on the correct backswing plane encouraging the correct movements to promote good solid ball striking (Pic 4)
